Maria Włoszczowska will make her debut with Camerata Bern tonight and present her curated programme ‘Albion’. Touring Bern and Lugano, Maria will stand and direct a range of works from Thomas Adès’ ‘O Albion’ from ‘Arcadiana’, arranged for string orchestra, to the ‘Cavatina’ from Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130 No. 13. She describes the programme as:

‘Albion’, a programme spanning eight centuries of music, takes its name from the sixth movement of Thomas Adès’ string quartet ‘Arcadiana’. It is also the oldest word we know of for the island of Britain. Several strands tie the programme together – we explore works by British composers, investigate how the string quartet is often adaptable and remains at the core of the larger string ensemble, discover how the past affects the present, how the mystery of the ancient still inspires composers to this day, and how music can be an effortless vehicle for time travel. The timeless ‘Cavatina’ from Beethoven’s op. 130 String Quartet prepares us for the mystery of Hildegard Von Bingen’s works from the 12th century, making way for Bach’s dramatic D Minor Concerto – a reconstruction of the violin version of the famous Keyboard Concerto. ‘O Albion’ by Adès evokes the still, ageless quality of Beethoven’s ‘Cavatina’ and introduces the British part of the programme with Bridge’s rarely-performed ‘Lament’ and Britten’s tour de force for string orchestra – Variations on a Theme by his teacher, Frank Bridge himself. A true journey through the ages!
