Anthony Marwood’s recording of Thomas Adès’ Violin Concerto ‘Concentric Paths’ has been ranked the top version by Radio France.

In a blind comparison of six recordings of the 2005 concerto, explored in a special two hour programme, presenters Jérémie Rousseau, Fanny Clamagirand, Benoît Sitzia and Thomas Vergracht selected Marwood’s interpretation as the finest. Conducted by Adès with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the recording was released on Warner in 2007 and reissued on EMI Classics in 2010.

The panel described the performance as “quite beautiful… you can feel a line, a certain simplicity, a certain clarity in the playing”, adding that “the soloist is really very impressive”.

The feature forms part of a wider series exploring Adès’ career as both composer and conductor – an artist with whom Marwood continues to collaborate closely. Commissioned by the Berliner Festspiele and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the concerto was written for Marwood, who gave the world premiere with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at the Kammermusiksaal, Berlin in September 2005.
