Cellist Laura van der Heijden features on the front cover of Gramophone’s January issue, appearing alongside other leading young artists including Timothy Ridout (Viola), Héloïse Werner (The Hermes Experiment) Max Ruisi (12 Ensemble; Ruisi Quartet) and Jean Rondeau (Harpsichord) all highlighted as part of Charlotte Gardner’s cover article “Classical Music: the new generation”.

In the article, Gardner encourages a shift in how we think about classical music recordings today, writing:
I believe that it’s now time to stop describing the mid-20th-century period in which Menuhin was in his prime as recorded classical music’s ‘golden age’. That was a golden age. Now we are in another, and it’s young-artist-led.”

Reflecting on artistic individuality and the value of authenticity in performance and recordings, Laura shares:
I think many musicians miss the days of rougher-edged recordings with more character and more imperfections. Imperfections make us human.”
