Andrew Litton Makes India Debut with Symphony Orchestra of India
This week, American conductor Andrew Litton makes his India debut, opening the Symphony Orchestra of India’s 35th season at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, based within the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai. The evening concert on Tuesday 12 August features Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, and the Indian premiere of Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony.
Speaking to The Hindu News ahead of his debut, Litton said, “When they told me they wanted to do Mahler’s No. 5, I immediately agreed. It’s a symphony I have conducted for 30 years, yet each time it offers a fresh challenge.”
Litton will then return to the podium with the orchestra on Sunday 17 August to lead Ravel’s Bolero, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Russian-Swiss pianist Konstantin Scherbakov, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1945).
