Juho Pohjonen has just returned from China, where he gave two warmly received performances with violinist Hyeyoon Park. The duo performed at Xianju Yong’An Theatre on 25th April and Hangzhou Grand Theatre on 30th April, presenting a vibrant and eclectic programme that blended familiar Western repertoire with celebrated Chinese works less often heard in the West.

The programme included Mozart’s Violin Sonata No. 24 in F major, K.376, Takemitsu’s Distance de fée, and Debussy’s Violin Sonata in G minor, as well as Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor. Audiences were also treated to two Chinese pieces: the first movement of the Butterfly Lovers Concerto by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang, and Spring in Xinjiang by Yaoxian and Zhonghan — both widely beloved in China but rarely performed internationally.
