Jonathan Stockhammer conducts Mahler and Britten at Music in PyeongChang
Jonathan Stockhammer will open the renowned Music in PyeongChang Festival with a performance of Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 2 in C Minor “Resurrection”, conducting the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Chorus of Korea, and soloists Sunyoung Seo and Jungmi Kim on Wednesday. The following week, Jonathan will be giving the Korean premiere of Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw: Secrets and Specters which features Ailish Tynan as The Governess and Robin Tritschler as Peter Quint.
Jonathan appears at Music in PyeongChang at the invitation of its Artistic Director Sung-Won Yang. The 22nd edition of the South Korean festival focuses on music inspired by encounters across cultures and generations and presents performances across the Gangwon province. Jonathan’s performances, which take place on Wednesday 23rd and 30th July at 20:00 (KST), will be live streamed on the festival’s official YouTube channel.
Jonathan will conduct more Mahler this summer at Ljubljana Festival, the programme a further celebration of the composers belated 165th birthday. Along with Ensemble Dissonance and soprano Nika Gorič and Jake Mihelač, Jonathan will perform Mahler’s song cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn, arr. Klaus Simon) and the Piano Quartet in A minor for Chamber Ensemble (arr. Klemen Hvala), along with Vito Žuraj’s Book of Bodies for Soprano and Chamber Ensemble, on 14 August at Križevniška Church.
